Almost half of the residents in Howard Beach, which is located in the South West of Queens, are of Italian origin.The neighbourhood is composed of many smaller neighbourhoods and the commercial heart of the area is Cross Bay Boulevard where many Italian restaurants and delis can be found.
The neighbourhood is known for its AirTrain station which connects it to JFK Airport. It is also known for being the place where the boss of the Gambino crime family, John Gotti, resided. The area has many waterways such as Hawtree Creek and Shellbank Basin and has an interesting variety of house styles including seafront cottages and mansions.
Every summer the Ave Maria Catholic Academy and the Parish of Our Lady of Grace host an Italian American Festival on 101st Street where there is live entertainment and attractions including fairground rides and Italian music bands.
