Palermo is the capital of Sicily and is renowned for its large natural harbour and its historical buildings dating back to the 8th century. It is home to the majestic Teatro Massimo, the largest opera theatre in Italy, and the Capuchin catacombs, containing thousands of mummified bodies. The city of Palermo is surrounded by picturesque countryside and the coastline is dotted with sandy beaches such as the resort of Mondello, popular with Palermitani.

Falcone-Borsellino Airport is named after Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the two leading anti-mafia judges murdered by the mafia in 1992.
